The standard US phone keypad

This is the standard ITU-T E.161 keypad layout, used on every US phone since the 1960s. Each digit from 2 through 9 corresponds to 3 or 4 letters.

1(no letters)
2A B C
3D E F
4G H I
5J K L
6M N O
7P Q R S
8T U V
9W X Y Z

0(no letters)
#(no letters)

How keypad conversion works

Each letter you type is converted to the digit on its key. So:

  • LAWYER → L=5, A=2, W=9, Y=9, E=3, R=7 → 529-9377
  • FLOWERS → F=3, L=5, O=6, W=9, E=3, R=7, S=7 → 356-9377
  • PIZZA → P=7, I=4, Z=9, Z=9, A=2 → 74992
  • HOMES → H=4, O=6, M=6, E=3, S=7 → 46637

So when you dial "212-LAWYER," your phone actually dials 212-529-9377. Both spellings reach the same number — the letters are just a memorability shortcut.

What to do with the result

Once you know the digit pattern your word spells:

  1. Search our catalog for numbers ending in those digits. Filter by your preferred area code (state).
  2. Check availability — if your exact word's digit pattern is available, buy it outright. One-time payment from $200–$250.
  3. Port to your business carrier in 24-48 hours. Works with AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, RingCentral, OpenPhone, every major US carrier.
  4. Deploy across your marketing — display as "212-LAWYER" (or whatever your word is) with the digit translation in smaller type below, per direct-response advertising convention.

Why vanity (alphanumeric) numbers outperform random numbers

  • Recall. A driver passing a billboard at 60mph cannot memorize 212-529-9377 in 2 seconds. They can memorize 212-LAWYER instantly.
  • Word-of-mouth. Customers quote "call 212-LAWYER" to friends from memory. A 10-digit sequence requires writing down — and many people don't.
  • Audio media. On radio and podcasts, the word survives the airtime. Random digits don't.
  • Branding double-duty. The word reinforces what you do. 212-LAWYER tells you who they are AND how to reach them.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some keys (1, 0, *, #) not have letters?

The standard ITU-T E.161 keypad maps letters only to digits 2-9. Digits 0 and 1, and the * and # symbols, have no letter equivalents. This means words can't include letters that would map to 1, 0, *, or #. (There are no English letters mapped to those keys.)

Why are some keys (7, 9) mapped to 4 letters while others (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8) only have 3?

The English alphabet has 26 letters and digits 2-9 are 8 keys. To fit 26 letters across 8 keys, two keys (7 = PQRS, 9 = WXYZ) hold 4 letters each, while the rest hold 3.

Can the keypad converter handle longer words or phrases?

Yes. Type up to 10 letters total. Most US phone numbers fit a 7-letter word in the last 7 digits, or a 10-letter word in the full 10-digit number with area code.

What if my word has more than 10 letters?

Use the first 7-10 letters that capture the essence of the word. For example, REALTOR (7 letters) fits a 7-digit slot; REALTORS (8 letters) requires the area code to be 2 digits — not possible in the US standard. Use abbreviations.

Do alphanumeric phone numbers cost more than random number sequences?

Yes — typically 2-5× more, because only a small fraction of all possible 10-digit numbers can be made to spell recognizable words, and the most desirable spellings in popular area codes are in demand. See our pricing guide for full details.

Can I dial the letters or do I have to dial the digits?

Either works on standard phones. The phone's keypad maps the letter you press to the corresponding digit and dials it. Your phone treats "212-LAWYER" and "212-529-9377" as the same number.
