How US area codes work

The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) assigns a 3-digit area code to every US phone number. Codes are tied to geographic regions but, since 2003, every US carrier honors number portability — number originally assigned in one area code can be used anywhere in the US on any carrier. When you buy an area code from us, you receive the full transfer kit (account number, PIN, current carrier) so your destination carrier can port it onto your account.

Area codes give a phone number an instant "where" signal — a 212 number reads as Manhattan even if you live in Tucson. That signal is why local area codes outperform toll-free numbers for businesses serving a specific market.
